2020.09.09 10:51 alexmagggggs I can’t cope with change and I’m stressing about my parents finances.

Hey guys so I’m 21 and my parents are buying a new home. And yes I still live with them as I’m from an Indian background so it’s common for us until probably till I’m married or when I finish my studies (which I’m gonna finish at 4 years as I’m probably gonna do masters) also I’m in a relationship but I don’t have any hurry to be married lol probs till 30 cause I’m still immature for that mind set so is my guy lol.
Anyways reason we are moving is because we live in an apartment which is not a bad size for 3 people but I guess it only has 1 bathroom plus the rooms are kinda attached in a way (hard to explain) and I guess we all always wanted to a independent house. We actually have been interested since I was 18/19 but it took a while for my mum to actually show interest in moving. Anyways we finally paid a deposit today (not confirmed but it’s like a holding one) however Idk why I feel kinda sad all of sudden since we live in such a convenient area (trains direct to city, library, park , best cheap food Indian, Thai etc and local shops) literally I kinda don’t even have to drive in my area.
The new area is very beautiful, I guess more posh looking and will also have these amenities in a year (it’s still a bit new but already almost developed) but of course there will be some differences (more with the food lol) I just wish we chose a house earlier when I was like in high school aha cause now I’m just so used to our apartment!! Lowkey I feel like my parents are too since we were all kinda quiet in the car after giving the deposit lol.
Also we actually had the budget for 725k but have gone with a 745k (double story, 4 beds, 300 ms2 , new area ) which is kinda cheap for what you would get in Australia (Sydney) for new areas especially a double storey as originally we were going with a single. It isn’t an issue but I guess it just means my dad and mum would have to pay off the house longer. Although my dad said he can manage!
The thing is I wanna help but they won’t let me pay rent. I think I’m more stressed out than they are. Although we only paid a holding deposit (which means we still can look at more options) the $1000 isn’t refundable. However my dad said if during the cooling off period we find something cheaper he wouldn’t mind. Idk why I’m getting so stressed and I’m not even apart of the whole process lol. I also feel a bit sad cause I’ll miss the area we are at now. My parents also wanna give me the bigger room but I honestly don’t want it 😭
I just wish I could help out. I mean maybe if the house isn’t confirmed we could just save money and renovate the apartment a little I guess but idk. Idk what I’m trying to get off here other than I’m feeling anxiety

2020.08.22 21:57 AmericanNewt8 "You've hit another cargo ship? The Problems with the US Navy: Not all of them begin with "Seven" and end with "th Fleet".

Rule Brittania America! America rules the waves!
Americans will never be slaves!

Welcome to yet another in my series of effortposts detailing the complex situation developing in the East Asia-Pacific Region, with today covering a portion of one of the biggest players--the United States, and, specifically, the United States Navy, which has decided that the best response to a massive naval arms race is to just go right out and decommission a large chunk of the fleet with no plans for replacements--not that they have much choice in the matter, as it was made for them in the late 1990s and early 2010s. I thought the condition of the US Navy was bad when I started this--but I didn't quite get just how dismal the outlook actually is, even with limited efforts being undertaken to fix some of these problems.
  1. What you [might] need to know about South Korea's ludicrous arms buildup
  2. We shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches.... uh, what do we do after that again?: The Perilous Defensive Position of Taiwan
  3. "You've hit another cargo ship? The Problems with the US Navy: Not all of them begin with "Seven" and end with "th Fleet"."
  4. [preliminary, some variant on the pun thereof] China has a PLAN

Glossary:
7th Fleet = the largest fleet in the US Navy and the one responsible for East Asia
AEGIS = Aegis combat system, the awesomest and most sophisticated combat system afloat by a mile, with only the latest Chinese destroyers beginning to come anywhere close, mostly used by the US Navy but also by Australia [full version] and Japan and South Korea [downgraded versions]
SSN = Nuclear attack submarine, or just attack submarine [US only] or fast attack
SSBN = Ballistic missile submarine, nuclear-powered, shoots nukes, part of strategic deterrent, also called boomer
SSGN = Cruise missile submarine, nuclear powered, primary armament is cruise missiles--sort of overlaps with newer SSNs, which incorporate VLS [vertical launch system] tubes for launching missiles
SSK = Diesel-electric attack submarine
Guided-missile cruiser = Cruiser that mostly shoots missiles, usually larger than destroyers
Guided-missile destroyer = Destroyer that mostly shoots missiles
Frigate = Whatever's smaller than a destroyer but still used in the open ocean, multipurpose generally
Littoral Combat Ship = Like a frigate except more expensive and more terrible in every single way
Navy SEALs= Named for Sea Air Land, the SEALs are the Navy's "contribution" to American Special Forces, and operate in all domains, not just in a marine role
Operational Tempo = Opstempo = basically the amount of stuff that the military is doing. Doing more with less means a higher opstempo.

1. Maritime vs Continental

This dives a little into IR theory, somewhat derived from one of the classics, Raymond Aron, a French thinker who is all too little known outside of France and the continent. I haven't read his stuff on this topic for a bit, so I may have forgotten some parts of this. In essence, Aron divides great powers into two types--the maritime and the continental. Maritime states are based around trade, openness, liberty, and other good things, and develop strong navies to protect their interests, particularly in trade. The Dutch and British were both maritime states, so was Athens, and, today, the United States, which has lacked a continental rival since the end of the Civil War. Continental powers, on the other hand, are more insular and autocratic, more focused on their army and their neighbors. Prussia, and later Germany, was one, as was the Soviet Union, and now China. While all of them certainly had navies, they were not top priorities--not key to their success. For the US, though, its navy is essentially the most important part of its armed forces, as only with the Navy can the US enforce its standards of trade, mount small expeditionary wars, and fight against foreign powers. The maritime domain is also the primary one through which power is projected. So as a result, the US Navy is really pretty important, all things considered--not just to the US, even, but to the entire world.

2. The Mighty American Navy

From the very beginning, America had a particular interest in naval affairs, due to a combination of its British heritage and a rapidly growing industry in fishing and commerce, centered around New England. The very first foreign wars fought by the US were conducted by the Navy against the Barbary pirates of the Mediterranean, and this naval tradition continued through the rest of the century, with the US Navy fighting pirates and opening new areas to American trade, from which the US has derived its wealth and power--most famously in its expeditions to East Asia, in which the US forced several nations--Japan most notably--to open themselves to trade at gunpoint. The US Navy only really came into its own, though, around the turn of the 20th century, as the US began to assert itself as a dominant power. The US already dominated merchant shipping and shipbuilding, and, beginning in the late 1880s, began building an absolutely massive fleet of pre-dreadnought battleships [sound familiar to anyone? This will probably be covered in the next post on China's navy].

The US Navy, in its modern incarnation, first tasted blood against the Spanish, in a series of lopsided victories against the declining power. It then went on to fight in the First World War, though never in a large set battle the likes of Jutland, and rather mostly as a counter-U-boat force. By the conclusion of the First World War, the US was one of the world's three great naval powers--the UK being the first and Japan the third. Shipbuilding was suppressed for a time by the Washington Naval Treaty, but by the late 1930s and early 1940s the Navy was the focus of American efforts to prepare for war, as shipbuilding takes substantially longer than most other tasks required in a military buildup. Then, of course, came Pearl Harbor--a dramatic blow that failed to cripple the US Navy and set it against Japan and, to a lesser extent, Germany. After a series of setbacks, the USN won a stunning victory at Midway [whether due to luck or skill, it is disputed] and from then on the US went pretty much undefeated to the end of the war, and, indeed, until the present. Lessons from the Second World War heavily influence American naval thinking even to this day, and some of them are the following:

Since WWII, the US Navy has only come to blows a few times, and it has generally distinguished itself in each case. The USS Liberty survived repeated Israeli attacks, sustaining casualties yet remaining afloat. The USS Stark survived a hit from an Exocet missile, again demonstrating a very effective and strong damage control tradition [which seems to be a particular talent of the USN--see the fate of the Yorktown after being thought destroyed multiple times during the Second World War]. US warships have survived collisions with freighters and suicide bombings by small boats. They're tough, really tough--it's telling that even the highly capable Royal Navy lost four ships in the Falklands to missiles that failed to take out even a small American warship. The US has also done quite well in the offense, too, destroying Libyan and Iranian warships with relative ease [built by the Soviets and British respectively]. The US Navy has also generally been on the leading edge of naval technology--its AEGIS combat system and AN-SPY1 radar are unparalleled in capability, its ballistic missile submarines carry more missiles and are quieter than their peers, and, well, you get the idea. However, the US Navy has some serious problems.

3. Corruption

I'm using corruption in a fairly broad sense here.
Our first, largest, and most pressing issue goes by the alias of "Fat Leonard", and, yes, this scandal is almost comical in its scope. In short, in exchange for steering contracts for naval services--everything from sewage disposal to sending in divers to search harbors for explosives--towards Leonard Glenn Francis, a Malaysian national whose 350lb [160kg] plus bulk earned him the nomiker of "Fat Leonard", officers in the Seventh Fleet [you're going to hear more about these guys] were provided with everything from cash to luxury vacations to visits from Fat Leonard's "Thai Navy SEAL Team" of prostitutes. 33 people were directly embroiled in the scandal, but what matters is who these people were--the top officers in the Seventh Fleet, and mostly flag officers at that. It also crippled the careers of hundreds of innocent officers who were merely in proximity to the guilty, who had to be investigated and were often not freed from suspicion for years afterwards. One admiral said the following: "China could never have dreamt up a way to do this much damage to the U.S. Navy's Pacific leadership."

Then, we have the destroyer collisions. Yes, collisions plural. The USS Fitzgerald and USS John McCain, both Arleigh Burke-class destroyers from the Seventh Fleet, hit different cargo vessels in Southeast Asia in separate incidents three months apart. In both cases the problems were similar--a lack of sleep, poor leadership, and poor situational awareness. This showcased what many sailors had known for years--that the Navy had a culture issue, that lack of sleep was a serious problem aboard ships, that training was insufficient and leadership erratic, especially in the Seventh Fleet, which, anecdotally, most sailors seem to avoid at all costs. It also highlighted a problem which has been afflicting almost the entire US military--aging equipment and an excessive operational tempo. This humiliating chain of events showcased these problems to the entire world.

After that, we have an array of problems. The Navy SEALs are by far the most guilty, and are, these days, despised in the military. In between everything from SEALs falsifying records and thus both covering up their cowardice and preventing an Air Force combat controller from receiving a Medal of Honor--this coverup was enabled by top brass, too, not just the SEALs--a group of SEALs raping a corpsman and thus getting the SEALs sent home from Iraq, and numerous other incidents, along with their tendency to hog attention, publicity, books and movies, the SEALs are so hated by other military members, even sometimes inside the Navy, that some might think about murdering a SEAL if they could get away with it--oh wait, no, that was the SEALs that murdered a Green Beret. But it's not just the SEALs. It's dog teams that hazed members and had at least two members commit suicide. It's submariners that placed cameras in the female showers. Now, it's not as if the other service branches don't have their problems and scandals every so often--but the Navy seems to be particularly guilty.

Thus, we have our first problem. A rotten culture. But this is really only the tip of the iceberg of the problems the US Navy has right now.

4. An Aging Fleet

The US Navy, like most of the US Armed Forces, has been hurt pretty bad by the "Peace Dividend" of the 1990s, and also from spending in the early 2000s when naval matters were simply not a top priority. Since the Navy operates on a greater lag than any other service branch--it takes quite some time to build ships--this is especially important. Below are several platforms which just... aren't there, or are going to see major gaps. In particular, the US Navy is going to have a rough time in the late 2020s as several platforms age out.

Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser
These ships are probably still the most potent in the US Navy, aside from the newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, which are expected to replace them. However, they are proving expensive to maintain, and are beginning to hit their 35-year end of life--the Navy actually has some plans to decommission some of them early [which I actually support for reasons addressed later], but as things presently stand they are expected to all be out of service by 2030. In the meantime, only 11 Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are scheduled to take the place of this 22-strong class, which was originally to be replaced by a cruiser variant of the Zumwalt.

Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer
As if replacing the "Ticos" wasn't enough trouble already, the Arleigh Burke class also is reaching end of service life for the earliest production units, starting in 2026, and 13 are expected to be out of service by 2030 unless expensive service-life extensions are funded. This class was supposed to be replaced by the Zumwalt, but, instead, has been kept in production, albeit in modernized versions. It's also now the Navy's do-everything tool because it has no frigates or smaller combat vessels, except for the LCS, which generally doesn't work.

Littoral Combat Ship/complete and total lack of frigates
The Littoral Combat Ship program has been a fiasco, and the ships produced are pretty much useless--so terrible that the Navy has made up excuses to decommission four vessels barely a decade old, that the Navy doesn't want any more LCSes, and that there have been serious proposals to replace the Littoral Combat Ship with forty-year-old Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates. The fact that the only frigate currently in service with the US Navy is the USS Constitution has also been irksome to many. This problem, at least, looks to be finally solved. The US Navy has begun building a very capable frigate based on the popular European FREMM design, and is planning on building two ships a year throughout the 2020s [and rumors say that the Navy likes the design so much we may see as many as 60 of these new, cheap, small ships].

Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine
These boats are reaching the end of their service lives, and, despite Navy efforts to extend their service lives by up to ten years, they're wearing out and not much can be done about it. As a result of the fact that their successor, the Seawolf class, was cancelled after three vessels were constructed, and that the Virginia class until recently was not a high priority in spending, the attack submarine fleet is projected to drop to 41 in 2029, despite the US Navy saying that it needs 66 at the very least--and in my view that's a conservative estimate.

Ohio class nuclear cruise missile submarine/ballistic missile submarine
These boats are all projected to, very consistently, hit their 42-year service lives [already extended from design expectations] and will have to be retired starting in 2023 [2026 for the ballistic missile subs] and will finally all be out of service in 2039. In the meantime, though, in the mid-2020s the US Navy will lose one of its most potent assets--the Ohio-class SSGNs--only partially replaced by new Virginia-class submarines with the Virginia Payload Module, and will then have to spend on extremely expensive and resource-hogging Columbia class SSBNs to replace their current fleet. It is expected that the costs of this procurement program will amount to $100 billion, spent over the next two decades, and this is expected to have a serious impact on the entire naval procurement budget.

5. Budget Troubles

These mostly begin with the infamous budget sequester, but to a degree precede it. Budgetary concerns resulted in the cancellation of the Seawolf and Zumwalt class, along with a cruiser replacement for the Ticos, and thus interrupted spending for years. The budget sequester was the final nail in the coffin, making a dramatic cut to military spending, and as a result readiness across the entire force has been on the decline. In addition, the US Navy is approaching a perfect storm of poor budgetary conditions--it must pay more and more to maintain an increasingly elderly fleet, while also spending billions on modernizations, service-life extensions, and replacements. There is, as of yet, relatively little sign that it'll get adequate funding. The Navy has repeatedly tried to cancel refuelings and decommission ships early, and to stop LCS purchases, all to no avail. Without a major increase in funding, the Navy is, to be a bit melodramatic, doomed.

6. Lack of building capacity and mothballs

In the past, the US was one of the world's great shipbuilders, and maintained a massive merchant fleet. This is no longer the case. The world's largest shipbuilder is South Korea, a nation which is also able to build the equivalent of an Arleigh Burke, US weapons systems included, for a price half that of an Arleigh Burke. The second-largest shipbuilder is China, the third-largest Japan, and the rest of the world combined ranks behind these top three. The merchant fleet of the US is small, and its production capacity is quite limited--and mostly focused on building barges, riverboats, and smaller freighters that navigate the intercoastal waterways and the Great Lakes. The military shipbuilding capacity of the US is limited as well. The submarine industry, for instance, can only build about three nuclear submarines per year if stretched to the limit, so once the Columbia-class begin construction, only two new Virginia-class boats can be built every year--and that's largely why the submarine gap is a thing. If a war broke out, the US would have limited capacity to build new warships, probably having to turn to shipyards in Europe, Japan, or South Korea if available.

In addition, in the past, the US maintained a massive "mothball" fleet of older ships, that could be restored to service relatively quickly if needed. For much of the Cold War, this mothball fleet consisted of large numbers of partially modernized Second World War naval vessels [the existence of this fleet was largely based on the US experience in WWII]. However, the once-massive mothball fleet [which also included resupply and logistics vessels] is now a relative minnow. At present, the mothball fleet contains a fairly substantial presence--two conventional supercarriers, nineteen Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates, three cruisers and two destroyers--but the only ships which seem to have a long-term future in the reserve are three Tarawa-class amphibious assault ships. There simply is no backstop for the modern US Navy. It is, however, a possible fringe benefit that the rapid retirements in the 2020s will result in a much more capable reserve force.

As a result, at the moment, the US Navy has no room for error in a peer conflict. If its ships are destroyed, they have no replacements. Fortunately the US Navy has done quite well at preserving even tremendously damaged vessels, but in the case of war, it is inevitable that some will be sunk.

7. Where to go from here

My suggestion would be that the US Navy, paradoxically, "shrink to grow". It's already facing a massive wave of retirements--but the vessels in the fleet already are generally undermanned, and personnel are stretched thin. Retiring the Ticonderogas early, as the US Navy has floated proposals to do, and not refueling the later Nimitzes, would save billions of dollars, and allow the US Navy to focus on personnel and culture issues while working to rapidly build up capability--and also preserving a substantial reserve force, possibly with multiple supercarriers and guided-missile cruisers. These early retirements are things that the Navy really wants to do, so I suggest we let them, and amend the current US Code which requires the Navy to have 11 carriers at all times [or just have the executive redefine "aircraft carrier" to include amphibious assault ships].

I also strongly endorse the US Navy's plans to build a large new frigate fleet, and in my view their current plans are still too unambitious--we should indeed be aiming for 60 frigates, or possibly even more. I would also suggest that the Navy just go right out and retire the entire Littoral Combat Ship fleet, but politics likely make that difficult to impossible, even if a lot of Navy brass probably would like to see the LCS go die in a ditch somewhere. Bringing back the Oliver Hazard Perry class might even be a viable stopgap solution until new frigates are built.

In addition, I have some proposals that the Navy is less likely to support.

I strongly recommend that the US Navy bring back diesel-electric attack submarines, probably starting off of a foreign design like the highly capable Japanese Soryu class [in no small irony since the Japanese based their modern subs off of our diesel-electric designs], but also incorporating US tech like the modular Virginia-class sail and SWFFTS. Doing so is the only way that the US Navy can hope to close the gap, by building at least twenty SSKs, and quite possibly many more--a class size around forty might make reasonable sense--and diesel-electric subs bring with them other advantages. They're much more capable in littoral seas like the East China Sea and South China Sea, and are much cheaper to purchase and operate--a single Virginia-class with the Virginia Payload Module costs six times the price of a Soryu, and even accounting for higher construction costs in the US, would still be much cheaper. It would also allow the US Navy to extend the lives of its SSN fleet, which wears out quickly in those littoral waters.

I am also of the view that the US Navy should seriously consider looking into light aircraft carriers, even really light ones like the Sea Control Ship that are built around the F-35B and/or UCAVs, that are built around sea control/area denial and anti-submarine warfare rather than as buses for marines.

In a similar vein, if the US Army's ludicrous Long-Range Strategic Cannon project bears fruit, the Navy would be wise to look into using it as a naval weapon, and the Navy should also resume its work on Prompt Global Strike now that the INF treaty is gone.

The Navy should also let go of its long nervousness of automation, which may be the only way to keep things running with fewer personnel and at lower costs, and also let go of the cult of the pilot [the Air Force really needs this, but that's a separate post] and ship-driver, embracing drones for use above, on, and below, the sea.

The F-18 Super Hornet isn't bad, but it's not what the Navy should be buying when the focus is on a peer conflict. The F-35 should really be the sole focus of procurement efforts, even if it is more expensive.

Finally, the US needs to make a serious effort towards reviving domestic shipbuilding and a merchant fleet. The Jones Act doesn't work and needs to go. Instead, the US should focus on subsidies for shipbuilding, and funding newer and more innovative construction methods--which will both increase capacity and possibly bring acquisition prices down for the Navy as the US gets better at building ships in general.

8. Conclusion

The Navy is in deep trouble, but if we act quickly it might be salvageable. A poor culture continues to cause problems for the Navy and particularly certain components of it, like the SEALs. Aggressive retirements are needed, but also aggressive shipbuilding starting now. The US Navy, no matter what happens, is likely to face an extremely serious capability gap in the late 2020s through early 2030s, and this time is likely to be exceptionally dangerous--if I were China, that would be when I would make my move, after my shipbuilding program was largely complete but before the US Navy had recovered from their wave of retirements.

Also, if you're not in the US, and you're not in, say, China, you should be pushing for domestic naval expansions pronto, or supporting them, or whatever you can do on that front. The fall in American capabilities means that your navy might be expected to make up the gap pretty soon.

9. Citations

As always, much of it does include Wikipedia and my head. But that mostly covers relatively unimportant and easily verifiable stuff, historical, etc. and I've linked a lot of fancier articles here. I've also undoubtedly been influenced by more articles, and even Reddit threads, in my views on the US Navy's problems, but I can't link everything.

2020.07.08 19:04 Marco_Polo94 Nightmare in Alice Spring

Creative writing
Hi folks, since I' am practising my creative writing I'd like to receive several feedbacks on that. I'll be probably not sound mother tongue; therefore if you need to point something out, please don't hesitate to do that. Actually, I don't know whether I can consider it as creative or just narration style, but despite that, I'm fully aware that you may find it dodgy and confusing as it's a description of my nightmare.
2:27 AM
I woke up in the middle of a nightmare wrapped in a sticky atmosphere due to my sebaceous glands, which were spreading loads of sweat on my body. My pillow had the signs of my oily face’s profile. Holy smokes! What’s going on? Even trapped within the utter darkness I could feel the white Benzac cream spread in the blanket.
What did I dream? I found myself at the baccalaureate examination which dates to 2014. Immediately everything looked so dodgy, especially the external examiner, who was from Germany. I spotted this detail while I was sketching him on my table using foreshortening perspective. I realised that through the observation of his jaw that was rough with hard edges. However, he found the pretext to declare my immediate suspension due to a considerable amount of unjustified absences. It was weird as shit, as I did turn up each day since I started. So, I couldn’t figure out the reason why I got kicked out of school. Should I have to blame him for that or anyone else within the room? Nevertheless, I would have expressed my opinion in front of the internal jury to point out my unimpeachable conduct, but they didn’t allow me to argue against him.
Another red curtain opened, and from the stage popped up a music teacher wearing hold-ups who was undoubtedly a transgender. My eyes couldn’t stare at anything other than her legs, which led my blood to move towards my genitals. She showed up telling me that she came from Phuket claiming that she was Miss Ladyboy in the Golden Age. I thought she was referring to the 1980s instead of Greek mythology. Although I was tempted to approach her because of her manners as femme fatale, at some point I started to feel anxiety, thus I rushed out from a backdoor behind the stage. Despite that, I didn’t know where to go. Once I went out, my mates started to follow my shadow, because apparently they were enthralled by something, which gave me the idea to be chased by a group of nosey donkeys.
The scenario changed again and I found myself in Asia, precisely in Japan, even though the atmosphere was so silent and chilly. For being inside the main road, I guessed it was strange. On the other hand, I glanced at a couple of details that reminded me to be within Bangla Rd. rather than Tokyo. The intricate wats and ornamentation in the background were a sign of the Buddhist religion, which in Japan isn’t so present as in Thailand. Suddenly, my mouth started to bleed. I lost a tooth, so I wondered what was going on, as a young male I had never suffered from neither parodontid or decayed teeth, even though I tended to use dental floss less often in the past month.
For this purpose, I began to look for a doctor to check on my mouth’s problem and immediately appeared a lady close to me whose features were so familiar. Since I had an outstanding guess to spot the provenance of people, I sorted every single piece of the puzzle out, coming up with the idea that she was from Udine. Her long nose, greasy skin, and tight legs were clear clues that oriented me to think about my old local area which at that time I had forgotten. She uttered to me a couple of words, but I didn’t capture all of them, as her accent was quite strong and miles away from a native speaker’s tongue. She was so indiscrete and rude. At some point, I began to think she lacked a primary education since she stated that I got an infection known as SARS or something like that. Indeed, I freaked out, and I ran away. Once I stopped to breathe, I felt as though my lungs were full of pleading, although I hadn't smoked at all for 2 years. It might also be due to my lack of exercise. I didn’t care too much about that until I noticed that another tooth dropped from my mouth. It looked to be surrounded by a puddle of blood since my gingivitis started to get worse. I kept heading to the main road without a specific purpose as wandering within a park. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel pain at all, so I wanted to have a shag. I wished like fuck that the Thai lady I bumped into before was there, but because of the crowd it was no longer possible to move back, so I decided to keep going on the way. I saw that everybody queued and was disciplined as long as they didn’t appear like a bunch of Indians who didn’t hesitate to break the civil rules. Indeed, they started to speak very loudly, not respecting the queue. Immediately, an Australian man approached me while I was trying to take refuge in an isolated corner. He came close me, ordering me to treat the infection unless it would spread all over the body. I swore to myself that I wished I had stayed in Sydney dealing with my boring clients rather than spending my life in Patong. My experience was doomed to last, I couldn’t do much to relieve my pain. I had messed up again. I started to pray, trying to move into a different reality.
In the meantime, the Buddha statue in Patong reflected the sun towards me, transporting me into a new scenario. I didn’t know what was going on, but from what I remembered it seemed to be sucked into an endless vortex of unknown origins. Now, I was standing in front of a new stage, surrounded by a series of Buddha statues carved in the wall. An immense fresco representing the leaning Buddha was staring at me like the judge who looks at you when you are under the judgement of the superior court, but you are not ready to plead guilty. As I turned my head, I recognised the place. I found myself in Wat Pho, God! It seemed strange as I was the only person there.
I had the perception to be surrounded by a dark environment although I didn’t focus on it. Suddenly, I heard a rumour as someone was blowing. Since it was a windy day, I correlated it with the flit of leaves. Wait a minute. I wondered whether my fiancé’s stories were true or not, so I closed my eyes, praying to be free of this nightmare. Well, I opened my eyes again as I got stuck at first sight on a little girl with black hair along her face. She was terrifying as watching The Ring on videotape. My mind couldn’t focus on her as my tachycardia started to increase. Her ears were the only detail I was able to see since they had the edges bitten like mine. How strange. Finally, as I was completely freaked out, I closed my eyes, and once I reopened them, I found myself in my bed.
Reality or fiction? There might be an interpretation for each event.
The German examiner was my manager in Australia. I sent him to fuck off without warning to escape in Phuket.
This is proof that KARMA also exists. So, it’s better to fix up your mess once you fall asleep. Be careful of the oneiric imagines because they hide untreated meanings, and don’t escape from them even though you will be screwed up.
Furthermore, the transgender teacher for whom I had a fiery erection at first sight may be related to different things.
  1. I’d bang everything at the sight of stockings and pantyhose.
  2. My stay in Bangkok, looking for a cure based on Androcur 50mg flanked by a good dose of oestradiol to become androgynous and maintain sweetness in the face. Reducing testosterone means increasing intelligence!
  3. The tooth that bleeds, is no doubt it is an advanced stage of HIV, so the RD Bangla is the confirmation of all that!
  4. The mother understands that you are infected with HIV and knows very well that you need to leave the country asap to receive adequate treatment. For this reason, you have to call infectiology to prescribe a hypothetical therapy based on antiretroviral drugs!
  5. The baby. Visible is a hypothetical daughter left in shit from the ordinary Farang. She is allegedly unaware of the fact that she might have already gotten the HIV positive.
It's probably just a CHUCK Palahniuk nightmare at Uluru!

2020.07.07 07:13 fogobum Sydney Smith's "Recipe for a Salad"

I have posted this once before, but I believe that y'all would appreciate it.

Sydney Smith's poem "Recipe for a Salad" is charming, but a bit opaque. My biker gang spent some time discussing whether it was a salad itself or a salad dressing. I happened across a near-identical recipe in an old cookbook labeled "salad sauce" that adds lettuce, so it's clearly the latter.
First Sydney Smith's poetic recipe, then the recipe from "Mrs. Hill's Southern Practical Cookery and Receipt Book". Following that you'll find my line-by-line comparison of the two recipes, and finally a modern (ie, with measurements) version of Sydney Smith's recipe. I have made it, and it is good.

Recipe for a Salad by Sydney Smith
To make this condiment your poet begs
The pounded yellow of two hard-boil'd eggs;
Two boiled potatoes, passed through kitchen sieve,
Smoothness and softness to the salad give.
Let onion atoms lurk within the bowl,And, half-suspected, animate the whole.
Of mordant mustard add a single spoon,
Distrust the condiment that bites so soon;
But deem it not, thou man of herbs, a fault
To add a double quantity of salt;
Four times the spoon with oil of Lucca crown,
And twice with vinegar procur'd from town
;And lastly o'er the flavour'd compound toss
A magic soupçon of anchovy sauce.
Oh, green and glorious! Oh, herbaceous treat!
Twould tempt the dying anchorite to eat;
Back to the world he'd turn his fleeting soul,
And plunge his fingers in the salad-bowl!
Serenely full, the epicure would say,
`Fate cannot harm me, I have dined today.'

Salad Sauce
From "Mrs. Hill's Southern Practical Cookery and Receipt Book" (Annabella P. Hill, facsimile published by the University of South Carolina (ISBN 1-57003-048-0)),
For a quart of lettuce:
Boil three eggs until the yolks are hard; separate them from the whites; mash them smoothly with the back of a wooden spoon. Mash a small Irish potato with a large tablespooonful of thick sweet cream. Strain the potato through a sieve, mix with the egg. Add a teaspoonful of mustard, one of loaf sugar heaped, a teaspoonful of salt,
A wineglass of good apple vinegar.
There is a prejudice with many against the use of olive oil; this is needless if the oil is fresh; no taste of it is discernible. The clarified essence of ham may be used in its place. Butter does not answer well. When cold the particles harden, and separate from the vinegar.

My take.
Lines marked "Sydney" are from the poem, lines marked "Hill" are from Mrs. Hill. Stuff marked "Commentary" is your humble chef redacteur.
Sydney: To make this condiment, your poet begs the pounded yellow of two hard-boil'd eggs
Hill: boil three eggs until the yolks are hard; separate them from the whites; mash them smoothly with the back of a wooden spoon;
Commentary: I went with two yolks, you do you.

Sydney: Two boiled potatoes, passed through kitchen sieve, Smoothness and softness to the salad give.
Hill: Mash a small Irish potato with a large tablespooonful of thick cream.Strain the potato through a sieve, mix with the egg;
Commentary: I decided entirely without evidence that Sydney lived in a placeand time with little teeny potatoes, and I've never liked unaged dairy products on my greens. One medium boiled potato, riced.

Sydney: Let onion atoms lurk within the bowl, and half-suspected, animate the whole
Hill: [Nothing.]
Commentary: no GARLIC? I've done the onion two ways: rubbing the bowl with the cut surface of an onion works. I've also taken one thin slice of a small onion and mashed and chopped it finely. There shouldn't be any noticeable chunks of onion, but there should be a background of onionness. I also rub the bowl briskly with a clove of garlic, because garlic.

Sydney: Of mordant mustard add a single spoon, Distrust the condiment that bites so soon;
Hill: Add a teaspoonful of mustard,
Commentary: A heaping teaspoon of mustard. It wasn't too much, but it was close to the edge. Sydney was right to be suspicious!

Sydney: [Nothing]
Hill: one [teaspoon] of loaf sugar heaped,
Commentary: This line disappointed me. I prefer to think of the sweet and sour salad dressings so popular in their serried arrays of brightly colored bottles as a modern invention. I'll still think that, I'm OK with being wrong. I skipped the sugar; it'd probably be a good addition for palates accustomed to sweet dressings.

Sydney: But deem it not, thou man of herbs, a fault, to add a double quantity of salt;
Hill: a teaspoonful of salt
Commentary: I went with Hill here. First, I suspect that our prepared mustard is saltier than that used in Sydney's time, and second, I was saving some of my salt budget for later. One level measuring teaspoon salt.

Sydney: Four times the spoon with oil of Lucca crown,
Hill: There is a prejudice with many against the use of olive oil; this is needless if the oil is fresh; no taste of it is discernible. The clarified essence of ham may be used in its place. Butter does not answer well. When cold the particles harden, and separate from the vinegar. The suace, by some, is preferred without oil or butter, using only salt, pepper, vinegar, and sugar.
Commentary: Given the quantity of vinegar Hill suggests compared to Sydney (see next section), I decided that, though the mustard and salt were clearly intended to be measured with teaspoons, oil and vinegar would be measured with tablespoons. 1/4 cup good olive oil.

Sydney: And twice with vinegar procur'd from town;
Hill: A wineglass of good apple vinegar.
Commentary: "vinegar procur'd from town" would, I think, imply a good cider vinegar, as Hill, in contrast to the (presumably then imported) wine vinegar
1/8th cup (2 tablespoons) cider vinegar

Sydney: And lastly o'er the flavour'd compound toss A magic soupcon of anchovy sauce.
Hill: [No such thing]
Commentary: Arguably, a reasonable man would mash a half a filet of anchovy, or squeeze a drop or two of anchovy paste from the tube, or even dash in a bit of Worchestershire sauce. I, having a fondness for Thai fish sauce and a fresh bottle thereof, sprinkled liberally therefrom (hence the careful rationing of the salt, above).

Sydney: Oh, green and glorious! Oh, herbaceous treat!
Hill: For a quart of lettuce
Commentary: Sydney is not particularly specific here. I sliced one medium head of romaine roughly 3/8 inch thick crossways.

Sydney: [Nothing]
Hill: Put this sauce on the bottom of a salad bowl.
Commentary: After briskly stirring the dressing ingredients, add the lettuce, toss to coat with the sauce.

Sydney: Twould tempt the dying anchorite to eat; Back to the world he'd turn his fleeting soul, And plunge his fingers in the salad-bowl!
Hill: [Nothing]
Commentary: It's quite good, but use a fork.

Sydney: Serenely full, the epicure would say,
"Fate cannot harm me, I have dined today."
Hill: [Nothing]
Commentary: Serves two.

And, you've finally reached the recipe:

Two hard boiled egg yolks, mashed
One medium boiled potato, riced.
Rub a sliced onion (and, optionally, a clove of garlic sliced in half) over the bowl.
2 teaspoons of mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar, optional, to taste
1/4 cup virgin olive oil.
1/8 cup cider vinegar.
1/4 teaspoon of fish sauce (to taste), or 1 fillet of anchovy well mashed.
(Substitute a dash of worchestershire sauce)
Combine all ingredients, toss with a small head of lettuce torn into bite sized pieces or sliced to your taste.

2020.05.04 18:04 MrRobert44 [OC] An insight in the world of football kits - 454 teams that play in the most unusual colors

I would like to start with a humble warning, that this will be a longer than "usual" post. Hopefully, it will compensate with the amount of information you might deem as interesting. :)

After finishing my first journey into the world of colors in football, by counting which teams play in red & black color combination, I decided to pursue my next curiosity:
How many football teams in the world play in unusual colors?
By this, I was thinking of teams which have a “main” color that is rarely used (grey, brown, purple, pink, etc.) or use an uncommon color combination.
Because of this coronavirus madness that is going on, I was able to spend more hours for this project than I planned, so in the end I was able to go into almost every single league in the world. I checked teams from over 400 divisions, of different tiers, from all continents. Although it’s not an official list, I tried to include as many clubs as possible on it.
Now, you're probably asking yourself "How do you measure how rare or how common is in football a color / combination of colors?"
An exact answer is impossible to give, so I started the study using my own experience as a football supporter, finally finding an useful purpose for the thousands of hours spent on watching football games. Therefore, I used a subjective point of view and excluded the color combinations that I, personally, considered to be the most common in football teams, namely:

The selection criteria for the teams were as follows:
  1. The team should have their main kit in colors which are different than the ones enumerated above;
  2. The team must have played or been associated with the colors for several seasons;
  3. The team should be currently active (dissolved clubs were not included).

But enough introduction, let’s jump straight into the list of the most uncommon kit colors in the world of football:

2020.04.24 13:10 Fwoggie2 Covid-19 update Friday 24th April

Good morning from the UK. It’s Friday 24th April. My marigold seeds have taken off and are starting to sprout secondary stage leaves (marigolds are good companion plants; they ward off various pests in a vegetable garden whilst they can also be good sacrificial plants should a slug manage to somehow breach our electric barrier). Meanwhile, the first of my wife’s radishes seeds is starting to emerge from the compost she put in a recycled milk carton tetrapak a few days ago; she’s very excited by this. Advance warning, today’s post is a bit food supply chain heavy. Happy Friday everybody.

Virus news in depth

AP Story from Tuesday 21st April: UN food agency chief: World on brink of `a hunger pandemic’ - The head of the U.N. food agency warned Tuesday that, as the world is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, it is also “on the brink of a hunger pandemic” that could lead to “multiple famines of biblical proportions” within a few months if immediate action isn’t taken. World Food Program Executive Director David Beasley told the U.N. Security Council that even before COVID-19 became an issue, he was telling world leaders that “2020 would be facing the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II.” That’s because of wars in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere, locust swarms in Africa, frequent natural disasters and economic crises including in Lebanon, Congo, Sudan and Ethiopia, he said. Beasley said today 821 million people go to bed hungry every night all over the world, a further 135 million people are facing “crisis levels of hunger or worse,” and a new World Food Program analysis shows that as a result of COVID-19 an additional 130 million people “could be pushed to the brink of starvation by the end of 2020.” He said in the video briefing that WFP is providing food to nearly 100 million people on any given day, including “about 30 million people who literally depend on us to stay alive.”
(Cont’d) Beasley, who is recovering from COVID-19, said if those 30 million people can’t be reached, “our analysis shows that 300,000 people could starve to death every single day over a three-month period” — and that doesn’t include increased starvation due to the coronavirus. “In a worst-case scenario, we could be looking at famine in about three dozen countries, and in fact, in 10 of these countries we already have more than one million people per country who are on the verge of starvation,” he said. According to WFP, the 10 countries with the worst food crises in 2019 were Yemen, Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria, Sudan, Nigeria and Haiti. He pointed to a sharp drop in overseas remittances that will hurt countries such as Haiti, Nepal and Somalia; a loss of tourism revenue which, for example, will damage Ethiopia where it accounts for 47 percent of total exports; and the collapse of oil prices which will have a significant impact in lower-income countries like South Sudan where oil accounts for almost 99 percent of total exports.

The Gulf Times takes a different slant on the story: ‘Instead of coronavirus, the hunger will kill us’; COVID-19 brings fears of a global food crisis - In Kibera, the largest slum in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, people desperate to eat set off a stampede during a recent giveaway of flour and cooking oil, leaving scores injured and two people dead. The coronavirus has sometimes been called an equaliser because it has sickened both rich and poor, but when it comes to food, the commonality ends. It is poor people, including large segments of poorer nations, who are now going hungry and facing the prospect of starving. “The coronavirus has been anything but a great equaliser,” said Asha Jaffar, a volunteer who brought food to families in the Nairobi slum of Kibera after the fatal stampede. “It’s been the great revealer, pulling the curtain back on the class divide and exposing how deeply unequal this country is.” Already, 135 million people had been facing acute food shortages, but now with the pandemic, 130 million more could go hungry in 2020, said Arif Husain, chief economist at the World Food Program, a UN agency. Altogether, an estimated 265 million people could be pushed to the brink of starvation by year’s end. “We’ve never seen anything like this before,” Husain said. “It wasn’t a pretty picture to begin with, but this makes it truly unprecedented and uncharted territory.”
(Cont’d) There is no shortage of food globally, or mass starvation from the pandemic yet continues the Gulf Times article. But logistical problems in planting, harvesting and transporting food will leave poor countries exposed in the coming months, especially those reliant on imports, said Johan Swinnen, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington. While the system of food distribution and retailing in rich nations is organised and automated, he said, systems in developing countries are “labour intensive,” making “these supply chains much more vulnerable to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations.” On a recent evening, hundreds of migrant workers, who have been stuck in New Delhi after a lockdown was imposed in March with little warning, sat under the shade of a bridge waiting for food to arrive. The Delhi government has set up soup kitchens, yet workers like Nihal Singh go hungry as the throngs at these centres have increased in recent days. “Instead of coronavirus, the hunger will kill us,” said Singh, who was hoping to eat his first meal in a day.

Coronavirus-driven CO2 shortage threatens US food, water and beer supply, officials say - The Guardian reports that there is an emerging shortage of carbon dioxide gas (CO2) according to a Washington state emergency planning document. The document, a Covid-19 situation report produced by the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC), contains a warning from the state’s office of drinking water (ODW) about difficulties in obtaining CO2, which is essential for the process of water treatment. The document says that the ODW is “still responding to [that day’s] notification of a national shortage of CO2”. It continues: “Several [water plants] had received initial notification from their vendors that their supply would be restricted to 33% of normal.” It further warns: “So far utilities have been able to make the case that they are considered essential to critical infrastructure and have been returned to full supply. However, we want to ask if CISA [the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency] can assess this through their contacts, if this is sustainable given the national shortage.”
(Cont’d) Asked to clarify the nature of this problem, ODW director Mike Means said in an email that his agency had first learned of potential problems when Seattle public utilities were “contacted by their vendor Airgas who supplied a copy of a Force Majeure notice”, warning them that their CO2 order would be reduced due to pandemic-related shortages. Force majeure is a contractual defense that allows parties to escape liability for contracts in the case of events – such as a pandemic – that could not be reasonably foreseen. In this case, Means wrote, “Airgas informed in their notice that they would only be able to do 80% of their normal service but subsequent discussions said to expect more like 33%”. At this point, he added, “we reached out to understand if this was a WA specific problem or national. We quickly understood it to be a national issue.”
(Cont’d) ODW had then contacted federal agencies such as CISA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) and industry bodies such as the Association of State Drinking Water Authorities (ASDWA). The main reason for national shortages, according to the CEO of the Compressed Gas Association (CGA), Rich Gottwald, is a ramping down of ethanol production. “Back in the summertime, the [Trump] administration exempted some gasoline manufacturers from using ethanol. Then we had Russia and Saudi Arabia flooding the market with cheap gasoline. All of that led to an oversupply of ethanol,” Gottwald said. “As ethanol manufacturers were ramping down because there wasn’t a market for their product, along comes Covid-19, which meant people weren’t driving anywhere”, he added. This led to plant closures, including among the 50 specialized plants that collect CO2 for the food and beverage market. Gottwald’s association, along with a number of associations representing food and beverage industries, which together use 77% of food-grade CO2, issued a joint warning to the federal government about the shortage. In an open letter to the vice-president, Mike Pence, the coalition warns: “Preliminary data show that production of CO2 has decreased by approximately 20%, and experts predict that CO2 production may be reduced by 50% by mid-April.” It continues: “A shortage in CO2 would impact the US availability of fresh food, preserved food and beverages, including beer production.”

The 'land army' needed to keep the UK's food supply chain going as thousands of tonnes of food risks going to waste - ITV has done a piece on the UK farming supply chain. Farmers are desperate for help. Without their usual influx of migrant workers from the EU, thousands of tonnes of food risk going to waste in fields up and down the country, just as the summer crops come into season. Every year our farming industry needs 90,000 seasonal workers. Like Robyn, many have put themselves forward - but in no way near the numbers needed. Others are finding the application process hard to navigate. Mark Thorogood, whose family have run the Essex farm for three generations, says it’s a perilous time for the food supply chain. "If we can't get the labour – it doesn’t get picked. That’s the crux of it", he said. Meanwhile, the charity The Food Foundation claims more than one and a half million Britons are going without food for at least a day because of the pandemic and three million have experienced hunger since the lockdown. On top of all that - the reality that nearly 50% of our food comes from abroad. With the numbers of ships crossing the Channel reduced and port workers hit by the virus, this is now under threat too. So could this crisis see a permanent change in how we feed our nation? The country's leading voice on food security, Professor Tim Lang gave us a grave warning: "The entire world food system is being disrupted. More disruptions are coming. Plantings not happening, food being wasted. "Britain only produces about 50% of its food - the country that can only half feed itself has got to wake up". (Personal note: this is why I’m putting effort into growing veg)

Supply chain news in depth

Hidden threat: Japan only has a 2-week stockpile of LNG (Liquid Natural Gas) - If supplies stop, it will cause major power supply problems in the country says Nikkei’s Asian review which has an article highlighting the continuing energy supply chain vulnerability in Japan ever since the Fukushima nuclear disaster. It takes about one month to ship LNG from the Middle East to Japan explains the article but if the coronavirus outbreak prevents ships from docking in Japan it could have a big impact on the country's power supply. The physical properties of LNG mean it is poorly suited for long-term storage hence the country only holding a two-week stockpile. Despite this, the country depends on the fuel for 40% of its electric power generation needs, and all of the LNG it uses is imported from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Tokyo Bay, which stretches across the prefectures of Chiba, Tokyo and Kanagawa, is Japan's most important LNG power generation hub. JERA operates many of the power plants there, all of which run on LNG. Accounting for about 30% of Japan's total LNG power generation, these plants produce 26 million kilowatts of electricity. If, for instance, the coronavirus was to force these plants to stop, the Greater Tokyo area would immediately lose its power supply (Personal note: that’s a population of approx 38.5m people).
(Cont’d) Today, LNG is a pillar of Japan's electricity. Before the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan, LNG made up 28% of the country's power generation. That increased to 40% in fiscal 2017 as the nation's nuclear power plants went off grid, one after the other, following the Fukushima nuclear crisis. While some of Japan's nuclear plants have come back online, based on the strictest standards in the world, only three of the 10 electric power companies have been able to do so. Moreover, the coronavirus is inching closer and closer to the nuclear plants. Recently, a contractor working at the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant in the southern prefecture of Saga tested positive for the virus and construction at the site was stopped temporarily. Japan has traditionally tried to maintain a diverse mixture of power sources -- including nuclear, LNG, fossil fuels and renewable energy -- due to its reliance on imports as an island nation. "It is highly unbalanced to depend close to half of our energy on LNG alone," an official at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry concedes. With shipments arriving constantly, a few missed shipments will not immediately signal a crisis. But an extended cutoff will spell trouble for the country.
(Cont’d) Japan was already facing a power shortage this year, "so the timing is very bad," said a power industry source. The Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Prefecture was shut down last month because it failed to meet antiterrorism standards. The No. 3 reactor at the Ikata nuclear power plant in Ehime Prefecture is offline following a court injunction. The number of nuclear reactors in operation this year is expected to temporarily fall by half from nine, so Japan cannot rely heavily on nuclear power. Japan's energy self-sufficiency stands at about 10%, well below the 40% for food. The movement to shift away from carbon has led to a backlash against domestic coal-fired power plants, so dependence on LNG could rise further. One reason that Tokyo Electric is rushing to restart its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata Prefecture is because "heavy concentration in LNG power in Tokyo Bay is a major risk to the stable supply of power," according to an official at the utility. The coronavirus pandemic is testing whether Japan's government and utilities can diversify energy sources to prepare against the risks that threaten supplies.

USA meat packing plant Covid-19 problems worse than originally thought - A rash of coronavirus outbreaks at dozens of meatpacking plants across the nation is far more extensive than previously thought, according to an exclusive review of cases by USA TODAY and the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting. More than 150 of America’s largest meat processing plants operate in counties where the rate of coronavirus infection is already among the nation’s highest, based on the media outlets’ analysis of slaughterhouse locations and county-level COVID-19 infection rates. These facilities represent more than 1 in 3 of the nation’s biggest beef, pork and poultry processing plants. Rates of infection around these plants are higher than those of 75% of other U.S. counties, the analysis found.
(Cont’d) While experts say the industry has thus far maintained sufficient production despite infections in at least 2,200 workers at 48 plants, there are fears that the number of cases could continue to rise and that meatpacking plants will become the next disaster zones. "Initially our concern was long-term care facilities," said Gary Anthone, Nebraska's chief medical officer, in a Facebook Live video Sunday. “If there's one thing that might keep me up at night, it's the meat processing plants and the manufacturing plants." Factory workers, unions, and even managers say the federal government – including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration – has done little more than issue non-enforceable guidance. On its website, for example, the CDC has released safety guidelines for critical workers and businesses, which primarily promote common-sense measures of sanitization and personal distancing. USA Today says that state health departments have also taken a backseat role in all but a few places. There’s more in the article here.

Meet the 12-year-old who rode 36 hours on Zwift alongside Geraint Thomas - The Tour De France winner and double Olympic gold medalist earlier this week did 3 12 hour cycling sessions to raise money for the UK’s NHS (National Health Service), eventually earning £350,000. Alongside him rode a 12 year old Mak Larkin who by the end of the 36 hours of cycling had managed to cycle 740km (460 miles). Proud mum Lynsey told Cycling Weekly: “Lockdown was really getting to Mak, being that he was so eager to race this season as it was his first year at national level road and mountain bike cross country. “He saw Geraint’s 36-hour challenge and told us he wanted to do some of it with him for something to do and to support the NHS. He then told us a few hours later that he wanted to do the full challenge and wanted to raise some money himself. At time of writing his fundraising page (also for the NHS) stands at £5,772 (approx €6,605 or $7,111 USD). Cycling weekly has more here.

A toddler has been able to hear for the first time after a groundbreaking remote switch-on of her cochlear implants - The BBC reports that audiologists in Southampton activated the devices for 18-month-old Margarida Cibrao-Roque via the internet as they are unable to see patients in person due to Covid-19 measures. Professor Helen Cullington said the procedure took "technical creativity". Margarida's father said it had "opened a big window" for his daughter. Margarida, who has been deaf since birth because she has Ushers Syndrome Type One, had received her cochlear implants in an earlier operation. Staff at the University of Southampton's Auditory Implant Service (USAIS) used specialist software and were able to monitor progress via videolink to the family's home in Camberley, Surrey. During the switch-on levels of electrical stimulation were gradually built up and Margarida's responses were constantly monitored. It is hoped her new cochlear implants will, over time, help her to hear and to communicate more easily. Margarida's mother, Joana Cibrao said the team were "just brilliant and made it happen" despite the lockdown restrictions. "The possibility of Margarida calling me mummy one day would mean the world," she said.

2020.04.20 14:04 Fwoggie2 Covid-19 update Monday 20th April

Good morning from the UK. I am late today but with good reason, my wife has had a really tough time this weekend with mental health (she is on meds for OCD, anxiety and Bipolar Type 2). Lockdown is tough for us all, but believe me it’s harder still for those with pre-existing mental difficulties. It could be worse, one of her friends (who has been sectioned before for mental breakdowns) is having to manage her mental health whilst fulfilling her duties as an A&E (ER) doctor in Wales. How my wife’s friend does it I have no idea, the stories coming out of UK hospitals are deeply disturbing (this link is 2 weeks old).

Anyway, onto supply chain; this morning I read an article from Forbes about the problems supply chain disruptions can cause. Here’s a lengthy quote:
“Our firm recently polled executives at major corporations around the world to ask them about the operational risks they perceived to their supply chains, and the response strategies they had in place. The results were enlightening. Executives identified a broad range of risks (see chart below), from volatile commodity prices (which 43% considered a major challenge), to protectionism (31%), to piracy (just 7%). That executives identified such a broad range of risks told us that global supply disruption is indeed a top-of-mind issue for managers of global corporations.
When we asked a subsequent question about the strategies in place to mitigate these risks (see chart below), we found no favorites. Rather executives were across the board, choosing a number of different approaches, but not necessarily those best suited to the operational risks they were facing: 33% of respondents indicated that they would make no changes to their supply chains, 20% intended to decrease the number of production locations, and 15% planned to increase the same; and a range of other options as well.
Given the nature of the modern, global corporation and the complex supply network that has developed around it, it is unsurprising that executives have not aligned on a unified strategy to mitigate supply chain risk. No longer does a supply chain consist of a simple process from factory to warehouse to delivery (if indeed it ever did). Rather, as new sources of supply have arisen, new markets have opened, and companies have sought greater scale and specialization. Supply chains have evolved into a network of hundreds of suppliers, sub-contractors and distribution centers, adding tremendous complexity…
...I was recently at a conference of supply chain executives in the United States who told me that planning is dead – the best they could hope to do was respond to risks as they arose. Who has the time, and what is the benefit, of planning in a world of continuous change, demand-driven marketing, and intense pressure for instantaneous responses?...
...In an environment where changes in global supply chain can be as sudden as they are unscripted, companies have to arm themselves with both foresight and peripheral vision, an understanding of the long-term, and agility to deal with the short-term. More than ever, companies have to provision for multiple scenarios and they can only do that by engaging in a dynamic and multi-dimensional scenario-based strategic planning process.”
----------
I like the last two paragraphs of the article in particular. In case anyone wants to read the rest of the article, it’s dated May 2010 and written in reaction to the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull and the chaos it caused to supply chains around the world. Plus ça change; it seems some boardrooms didn’t adjust their supply chains after that black swan event (maybe due to the cost and the resulting negative shareholder pushback). Link to the story.

Our Pandemic Summer: The fight against the coronavirus won’t be over when the U.S. reopens. Here’s how the nation must prepare itself. - The Atlantic has written a lengthy article about what the mid-long term looks like for the US in relation to getting back to normal after Covid-19. “I think people haven’t understood that this isn’t about the next couple of weeks,” said Michael Osterholm, an infectious-disease epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota. “This is about the next two years.” The article goes on to look at the pharmaceutical supply chain; “According to a University of Minnesota analysis, about 40 percent of the 156 drugs that are essential parts of critical care are becoming limited. Many of these depend on supply chains that involve China (where the pandemic began), Italy (the hardest-hit region in Europe), or India (which halted several exports)” … “Albuterol, the drug used in asthma inhalers, is scarce. Antibiotics, which control the secondary bacterial infections that afflict COVID-19 patients, are being depleted. Basic painkillers and sedatives, which are needed to keep patients on ventilators, are being exhausted. Hydroxychloroquine, the drug that Trump has repeatedly touted as a COVID-19 treatment despite a lack of good evidence, is running out, to the detriment of people with lupus and arthritis who depend on it. “It’s like everything we give to patients, we’re in short supply of,” said Esther Choo, an emergency physician at Oregon Health and Science University. “We’re now scrambling to find the backup medications, and we’ll run out of those too.””
(cont’d) If it turns out that, say, 20 percent of the U.S. has been infected, that would mean the coronavirus is more transmissible but less deadly than scientists think. It would also mean that a reasonable proportion of the country has some immunity. If that proportion could be slowly and safely raised to the level necessary for herd immunity—60 to 80 percent, depending on the virus’s transmissibility—the U.S. might not need to wait for a vaccine. However, if just 1 to 5 percent of the population has been infected—the range that many researchers think is likelier—that would mean “this is a truly devastating virus, and we have built up no real population immunity,” said Michael Mina, an epidemiologist and immunologist at Harvard. “Then we’re in dire straits in terms of how to move forward.” The article is lengthy and also discusses options for reopening the economy and society in the USA.

My usual sources are as normal The Guardian and CNN live blogs unless otherwise specified.

Personal note: If you are on the Eastern seaboard of the US and in a hurricane prone area, it would be a good idea to review your hurricane plans and supplies now, e.g do you have a generator and does it work, spare fuel, batteries, candles, do you have enough long life food already stored + cleaning products, do you have an alternative method of cooking food, what’s your evacuation plan, etc etc. See https://www.weather.gov/safety/hurricane-plan for help with this and note FEMA is already under a lot of strain due to the virus and would thus likely struggle with a major hurricane impact on the US seaboard - see also this USA Today article dated 6th April this year on that topic).

Susceptibilities of Solar Energy Supply Chains - The Global policy journal has written a detailed review of the supply chain disruption faced by the solar panel industry here. Whilst manufacturing was significantly reduced from January to March in China (down 13.5%) and is now almost fully recovered, its reliance on materials from around the world mean the supply chain is exposed in other parts. China has the majority market share in the mining or processing of most minerals used in solar panels, such as: silicon, aluminum, selenium, tellurium, arsenic, cadmium, and gallium. However, China still depends on many other countries to complete their solar panels, such as Peru for copper, Saudi Arabian oil for energy, and Japan for silicon wafers. In mid-March, Chinese owned mining company MMG Ltd reduced operations at its Peruvian copper mine after Peru declared a state of emergency in response to the coronavirus. Due to the damaged mining link in the supply chain, an initial spike in solar module price is expected due to shortages of materials for solar wafers and module glass, affecting the solar industry for months to come. Kangping Chen, the CEO of the top solar module supplier in the world, JinkoSolar, stated that around 400-500MW of Q1 2020 shipments are likely to be postponed to Q2 2020. The 500 MW postponement is approximately 14% of JinkoSolar’s 3.6GW quarterly solar panels production last year. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) stated that “before the pandemic hit, the solar industry was poised to set a record for deployment in 2020,” with solar installers being America’s fastest growing profession. A new SEIA survey now suggests cancellation rates for residential solar systems in the US are now at 19%, with postponement rates hitting upwards of 50% in some areas.

Illinois adjusts on the fly to meet medical supply needs in a coronavirus ‘Wild West’ - The Chicago Sun Times details a story from about two weeks ago where Illinois officials tracked down a supply of 1.5 million potentially life-saving N95 respirator masks in China through a middleman in the Chicago area and negotiated a deal to buy them. One day before they were expecting to complete the purchase, they got a call in the morning from the supplier informing them he had to get a check to the bank by 2 p.m. that day, or the deal was off. Other bidders had surfaced. Realizing there was no way the supplier could get to Springfield and back by the deadline, Illinois assistant comptroller Ellen Andres jumped in her car and raced north on I-55 with a check for $3,469,600. That’s just a taste of the “Wild West” world of emergency procurement taking place over the past several weeks as the state fights for equipment and supplies to protect frontline workers and patients in the battle against COVID-19. Most of that work is being performed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration through a rapid-procurement strike team, pulling together procurement specialists from around state government under the auspices of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. As Pritzker has made clear at his daily briefings, it’s an effort made all the more difficult by the absence of a strong, coordinated White House response. That’s left Illinois competing against other states, foreign nations and even our own federal government for the same materials. They’re all looking for what we have come to know as PPE or personal protective equipment — masks, gloves, gowns and face shields — plus coronavirus testing kits and swabs and, most prized of all, ventilators to help those most seriously ill keep breathing.

SWABS, STAT! Inside the Maine factory racing to supply America with virus test swabs. - If you’ve ever used a home DNA kit, opened wide and said “ahh,” or measured the depth of a knife wound in a stabbing victim, chances are you’ve used a device made by Puritan Medical Products Co, says Bloomberg. And if you’re tested for Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, it’s quite likely that the swab used to collect a sample from inside your nose will have been made by Puritan, too. Located in Guilford, Maine (population 1,521), Puritan is one of two companies that make essentially all of the swabs used for coronavirus testing. (The other, Copan Diagnostics Inc., is in Italy, an epicenter of the deadly virus.)
(Cont’d) “Swabs could be a weak link in broadening testing,” former U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb tweeted on March 16. That was four days after Puritan first started getting calls from the U.S. government, according to Timothy Templet, executive vice president for global sales, who entered the conversations himself shortly thereafter. “I’ve been on the phone since Saturday with many government organizations—Health and Human Services, FDA, working groups—just trying to provide accurate information regarding the ability to produce as many swabs for the country as we possibly can,” he says. The federal government, however, doesn’t buy directly from Puritan. Instead it helps coordinate with Puritan and other medical suppliers and distributors to get the swabs where they need to go. “We are ramping up to produce and wrap a million swabs a week that we need to put into the supply chain across the U.S.,” Templet says. His problem? Not enough machines or labour to meet demand.

**In Pursuit of PPE (**Or if you prefer, “how I managed to buy some PPE on the American black market for my hospital”) - The New England Journal of Medicine is not something I often read (Actually I’ve never read it before in my life) but this article caught my eye: As a chief physician executive, I rarely get involved in my health system’s supply-chain activities. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed that. Protecting our caregivers is essential so that these talented professionals can safely provide compassionate care to our patients. Yet we continue to be stymied by a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the cavalry does not appear to be coming. Deals, some bizarre and convoluted, and many involving large sums of money, have dissolved at the last minute when we were outbid or outmuscled, sometimes by the federal government. Then we got lucky, but getting the supplies was not easy.
(Cont’d) A lead came from an acquaintance of a friend of a team member. After several hours of vetting, we grew confident of the broker’s professional pedigree and the potential to secure a large shipment of three-ply face masks and N95 respirators. The latter were KN95 respirators, N95s that were made in China. We received samples to confirm that they could be successfully fit-tested. Despite having cleared this hurdle, we remained concerned that the samples might not be representative of the bulk of the products that we would be buying. Having acquired the requisite funds — more than five times the amount we would normally pay for a similar shipment, but still less than what was being requested by other brokers — we set the plan in motion. Three members of the supply-chain team and a fit tester were flown to a small airport near an industrial warehouse in the mid-Atlantic region. I arrived by car to make the final call on whether to execute the deal. Two semi-trailer trucks, cleverly marked as food-service vehicles, met us at the warehouse. When fully loaded, the trucks would take two distinct routes back to Massachusetts to minimize the chances that their contents would be detained or redirected.
(Cont’d) Hours before our planned departure, we were told to expect only a quarter of our original order. We went anyway, since we desperately needed any supplies we could get. Upon arrival, we were jubilant to see pallets of KN95 respirators and face masks being unloaded. We opened several boxes, examined their contents, and hoped that this random sample would be representative of the entire shipment. Before we could send the funds by wire transfer, two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrived, showed their badges, and started questioning me. No, this shipment was not headed for resale or the black market. The agents checked my credentials, and I tried to convince them that the shipment of PPE was bound for hospitals. After receiving my assurances and hearing about our health system’s urgent needs, the agents let the boxes of equipment be released and loaded into the trucks. But I was soon shocked to learn that the Department of Homeland Security was still considering redirecting our PPE. Only some quick calls leading to intervention by our congressional representative prevented its seizure. I remained nervous and worried on the long drive back, feelings that did not abate until midnight, when I received the call that the PPE shipment was secured at our warehouse.

Deserted Thai beaches lure rare turtles to build most nests in 20 years - Thailand has found the largest number of nests of rare leatherback sea turtles in two decades on beaches bereft of tourists because of the coronavirus pandemic, environmentalists say. In Thailand, with 2,765 infections and 47 deaths, travel curbs ranging from a ban on international flights to an appeal to citizens to stay home have brought a collapse in tourist numbers, but freed up the beaches for wildlife. The 11 turtle nests authorities have found since last November were the highest number in 20 years, said Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, the director of the Phuket Marine Biological Center. “This is a very good sign for us because many areas for spawning have been destroyed by humans,” he told Reuters. No such nests had been found for the previous five years. Leatherbacks are the world’s largest sea turtles. They are considered endangered in Thailand, and listed as a vulnerable species globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. They lay their eggs in dark and quiet areas, scarce when tourists thronged the beaches. People have also been known to dig into their nests and steal eggs. (link)

Minnesota trooper's roadside gesture during traffic stop brings doctor to tears - A state trooper pulled over a doctor for speeding on an east-central Minnesota interstate, told her she should know better and sent her on her way grateful for receiving only a warning and not a ticket. The trooper also gave her a fistful of coveted N95 medical masks that were issued for his protection from the deadly coronavirus pandemic. “I burst into tears,” Dr. Sarosh Ashraf Janjua, a Boston native and cardiologist, wrote in a detailed Facebook account of the traffic stop on March 21 along Interstate 35 in North Branch as she traveled from work in Duluth for a break in Minneapolis. “I think he teared up a little as well before wishing me well and walking away.” Janjua also saw the masks handed to her as having value beyond their role in stemming the virus’ spread. “This complete stranger, who owed me nothing and is more on the front lines than I am, shared his precious masks with me, without my even asking,” she wrote. “The veil of civilization may be thin, but not all that lies behind it is savage. We are going to be OK.” (Star Tribune link)

2019.11.15 15:52 no_white_worship Update on Australian Broadcasting Corporation story on love and prejudice

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-15/sex-dating-and-prejudice-why-we-are-a-nation-sharply-divided/11694038
2 weeks ago, the ABC called for stories about prejudice and dating. The story has gone live and while the usual WMAF crap is there, they also published the experiences of Asian men. Below are some submissions (there was conern by AI users that only AF-promoting experiences would be seen - glad Asian men got their voice):

I am very aware of the portrayals of Asian men in the media. Maybe it is for this reason that I focus so much on my dating life; part of me wants to prove to myself that I'm not emasculated, I'm not ugly and I'm just as valid a romantic partner as anyone else. I just want to people to judge me as an individual - for my values, my beliefs, my personality - instead of instantly reaching for previously ingrained notions of race. I hope that one day my son will not be plagued with the same self-esteem question: "Am I enough?" SC, 24, Sydney, NSW

I am of South Asian descent, Aussie born and bred. I met a delightful Korean woman online, also Australian born. We connected like I've never connected with anyone before. After several dates, she said we should invite friends. She invited mainly Asian female friends. Straight away they claimed I had an "Indian accent" and couldn't understand me. They kept on mentioning how Indians and Pakistanis like to rape. She was in tears. The next day she texted, saying she liked me but her family and friends would never accept me and that "We should only date our own race". Six months later I saw on Facebook that she was seriously dating a white guy. I've realised as I hit my 30s that being born white is a ticket to being desirable to any group. Rohan, Melbourne, Vic
As an Asian male, the intersection of my gender and ethnicity in the Western world does not have positive repercussions for my romantic life. There are multiple times that I've had females tell me, face to face, that they will not date an Asian male. A lot of Asians want to have white partners because it allows us to feel like we've been accepted into the mainstream, like we're validated by those who wield cultural power. I spent most of my high school life wanting to only date white girls. Whilst I didn't recognise it at the time, part of this was because I also wanted a ticket into social acceptance and dating was one of the fastest and most obvious methods. SC, 24, Sydney, NSW

I am originally from England and moved to Australia when I was six. Li Jun is from China and moved to Australia nine years ago. We met in 2013. When we started dating, I noticed a few of my friends would make comments about me "liking it small" and one even asked, "Why would you go for the beta male?" Needless to say I'm no longer friends with that person. When we got married and his friends from high school found out, they kept telling him 为国争光, which translates roughly to “getting honour for the country”. I asked Li Jun why marrying a Western girl was honourable for the country and he said it’s because they think it’s good that a "Chinese man dominated a foreigner". Jessica and Li Jun, Perth, WA

I'm an East Asian male. When I was at uni, the biggest amount of prejudice tended to come from East Asians. These girls (Australian-born Asians) would have the biggest amount of self-hatred where they'd say stuff like I won't date an Asian guy because he reminds me of my brother. I will only date an Asian guy with X amount of super high requirements but then just date some white-Australian guy that was nowhere near their requirements and call it "true love". Being Australian-born Chinese myself, I'd have many white Australian friends but they all craved white girls. When they got together with an Asian girl, they never really were serious with them and kind of just used them as a backup plan until they found the white girl they truly desired and wanted to marry. Jonathan, 40, Brisbane, Qld
I come from a very middle-class white family. My parents divorced when I was in my teens. My dad eventually began dating a Thai woman, Tracey, who had a child. My mum used to call her Tracey 'Ting Tong' and outright insult her to my dad. Dad and Tracey split after around 10 years, and he started dating a Vietnamese woman, and my mum has started asking why he "keeps going for imports". It doesn't matter how many times I pull her up on this, she is convinced she's just "having a joke", and "not racist". Rebecca, Pakenham, Vic

I once had a long term relationship with a Caucasian woman, whom I intended to marry. She got shamed for seeing an Asian man, with comments racially critiquing the size of my penis. I even overheard her closest friends telling her if I had babies with her that they would be so ugly. Her mother was relentless, asking me why I didn't date Asian women, saying interracial relationships never last and women prefer white men. Eventually Hayley broke it off with me, which devastated me. I ended up so depressed. Now in my forties, I have resigned myself to being single for the rest of my life. boe
My story is a confession. I'm a Chinese-Australian woman and I am not attracted to East/Southeast Asian men. Other races/ethnicities, yes. Just not the men of my ethnicity. I'm not proud of it. I assume it must be some kind of internalised racism, as I can't imagine that if I had grown up in China or elsewhere in Asia (I grew up in Australia), I would go through life not being attracted to anyone. I know this is what a racist would say, but I have many close, male, Asian friends; I have just never been sexually attracted to an Asian man. I wonder how many other immigrants feel this way towards their own races/ethnicities? Self-discriminating, NSW

Most importantly was the part highlighting sexual racism (the average white Aussie has little to no idea what this is):
Stereotypes about Asians, for example, portray them as feminine and submissive — characteristics have traditionally been associated with the ideal female mate. “That works in favour of Asian women but it doesn’t work in favour of Asian men,” Dr Thai said.
These gendered patterns of racial preference are clearly seen in studies of heterosexual attraction. “Men tend to be more attracted to Asian women than black women... Women tend to be less attracted to Asian men than, say, black men,” Dr Thai said. “These differences tell us that it’s not random, personal preference. It’s systematic and it’s based on societal stereotypes.”
“Own race attraction is most prevalent and that makes a lot of sense because we are most attracted to people who are similar to us,” he said. “But layered on top of that is an attraction to white people. So if anyone dates outside their group, it’s most likely to be someone white.” Studies have shown that this “white idealisation” is taken to the extreme among gay men. “The white ideal overrides everything... It doesn’t matter if you’re white or if you’re from an ethnic or racial minority group, you typically find white men to be most attractive and you typical desire relationships with white men the most.”
And some interesting stats (but don't know how rigorous), such as those aged 18-29 were less open to inter-racial dating than 30-39 and 40-49 and were actually closer to boomers (50-64).

The deadline for each challenge, as the title says, is one week (Sometimes, the deadline is 2 weeks instead of 1, typically the third and fourth week will be combined into one hunt).
The appearance of the tokens needed to be collected differs each edition. For example: For Subway Surfers World Tour: Tokyo, Japanese keychains are needed to be collected, while pumpkins are needed to be collected in Subway Surfers World Tour: New Orleans, however, they serve the same purpose. There are 3 challenges per edition and each challenge requires the player to collect a different amount of tokens, the higher the amount the tokens needed, the better the prize. Weekly Hunts last for seven days.
Be sure to grab all weekly tokens within a single run to help with the Big Game Hunter award (Happy hunting! Complete the Weekly Hunt in one run). To make it easier to grab the tokens, choose the Bouncer board (or any other board with the Super Jump Special Power) and use your board whenever you see a token that is in a hard to reach location. The Super Jump ability will allow you to jump onto train cars to reach tokens otherwise impossible to grab.

Completing a name gives you a Super Mystery Box, after which you can move onto the next character. If you do not have a character in the lineup, you are given the opportunity to buy them using coins at regular price (typically 95,000 coins for limited characters), or you can skip the character by watching an advertisement. However, you can only watch the advertisement if you have a secure internet connection, or else you will have to use keys to skip to the next character.
The Wordy Weekend event is the one of the few chances you get to buy limited characters with coins after the edition where the characters originally appeared. It is recommended to buy the non-limited characters first, as they will show up every week and allow for more chances are opening Super Mystery Boxes.

If You Actually Desire To Learn To Defend Yourself - Read This!

Muay Thai Sydney
This article is going to show you the generally required steps to begin your self-defence journey, and how to actually learn Muay Thai in Sydney. But before actually starting, understand that there isn’t any ‘magic pill’ to take here. Just like all other sports, you must have real willpower and determination that’s needed to keep on training consistently. If not, you will just be wasting time.
Learn the sport’s history
You should endeavour to learn the history of this fabulous martial art. Its history is quite fascinating, and is a fundamental step for your journey. In short, its history is interconnected with that of Thailand. Back in Thailand’s early days, it had several risks of invasions from neighbouring nations while it was still undergoing the process of self-formation. As at that particular time, only short weapons like pikes, clubs, and swords were available, the body’s natural weapons like the fists and elbows had to come into play. It’s from this reality that it got developed into a martial art that was systemised and came to be called Muay Thai.

Join a gym

This is certainly the basis of your actual journey;thus, you must be careful in choosing here. Every individual gym will certainly feature a varying individual training regime, so, always remember that. Every individual Sensei (teacher) will have his own individual mindset about the sport, and this will consequently reflect on the training he will give his students. So, you must consider all this before choosing any Muay Thai gym in Sydney. Features should seek when choosing a gym to join include;
· An excellent warm up schedule.
· Concentration on conditional training.
· Constant sparring.
· A Sensei with a training philosophy that’s similar to yours.

Spar frequently

The majority of individuals are of the belief that a punching bag is capable of teaching them every single thing. The truth remains that, as a static target, a punching is only capable of teaching you just some limited skills. It is when you spar against other opponents that you will actually get to learn and practice the entire set of necessary skills, including both defense and evasion. It can initially be quite challenging if you happen to have never sparred with anybody in the past, but with the passage of time, it will become much easier for you to fight, both outside as well as inside the ring.

Train your endurance

Stamina is certainly going to be your dearest friend in the ring as a fighter. Long hours spent running will certainly help, but you will need to use other kinds of endurance training like push-ups and rope skipping. You must never forget; what is actually the use possessing all the necessary skills if, you actually lack the necessary stamina that’s required to use them?
This is all you need to know about how you can effectively yet quickly learn Muay Thai in Sydney. The fascinating form of martial arts will certainly help you in defending yourself against all forms of aggression. This article has then delivered on its promise of offering what you should read, if you want to learn to defend yourself.

2019.02.15 13:37 Marco_Polo94 Creative writing

Creative writing
Hi folks, since I' am practising my creative writing I'd like to receive several feedbacks on that. I'll be probably not sound mother tongue; therefore if you need to point something out, please don't hesitate to do that. Actually, I don't know whether I can consider it as creative or just narration style, but despite that, I'm fully aware that you may find it dodgy and confusing as it's a description of a nightmare.

Olgas
